Side pleats run on the diagonal, which softens a large shade the way a knife pleat cannot, and the beige is a warm eggshell rather than a cold white — it sits naturally against oak, cream and brass. On a full-size living-room lamp base it is the difference between a lamp and a piece of furniture.

Good to know: It costs three to four times the clip-ons above, and at 18 in across the bottom it will swallow a small bedside base. Measure before you buy.
